Description
Lead time (mentioned in the listing above “add to cart” button) means time it takes to prepare this order. Product in stock does not mean its ready to send out, it means it can be prepared in the lead time mentioned.
About this Kit
Complete Kit: Everything you need is included—just add water and follow the simple instructions.
This kit uses a special Master’s Mix—a blend of sawdust, soy pellets, and water. It’s inoculated with about 300 grams of organic rye or millet grain spawn to give your mushrooms the best start.
We keep everything simple: fresh, made-to-order bag, no long cold storage, etc.—we pass savings to you. We call these kits ‘almost ready to fruit’.
Humidity: Keep very high humidity (90–95 %+) during pinning and fruiting to prevent drying of thin stems.
Mushroom Growing and Cultivation
Light: Low light (100–200 lux) is ideal to keep stems long and caps small. Minimal but consistent diffused light helps cap formation.
Air: Reduced fresh air exchange (higher CO₂) helps elongate stems in enoki; gentle airflow is needed after pins form to avoid CO₂ poisoning.
Storage: Unopened kits can be stored cool and dark for a short time, but prolonged storage reduces vigour of fruiting.
Enoki (Flammulina velutipes)
Enoki mushrooms are famous for their long, thin stems and small caps in cultivated form — in nature, they look quite different (shorter, brownish). They grow naturally on dead hardwoods (elm, beech, poplar, ash), decomposing wood.
Cultivation often uses hardwood sawdust supplemented with bran or other nutrition (e.g. 78 % hardwood + 20 % wheat bran + minor sugar / gypsum).
To get the classic “needle” stems, high CO₂ and low light are used during fruiting induction.
Enoki contains dietary fibre, polysaccharides, antioxidants, and has been studied for hypolipidemic effects.
Step-by-step Instructions & Post-Harvest Care
IMPORTANT- Check the fruiting temperature when you buy a kit and ensure you can deliver those cooler temps (8–12 °C for this template; many growers use 10–15 °C).
Step 1 – Let It Grow (3 Weeks)
*Take the bag out of its packaging and remove the tape holding the folded bag.
*Stand it upright so the white filter patch is unrestricted on the top, this is where the mycelium in the bag breathes from. Do not cut the bag for fruiting yet.
Please keep it away from direct sunlight, windows, fans, AC, or a wardrobe.
Let it sit like this for 3 whole weeks from the inoculation date on the label.
💡 Tip for First-Timers: Enoki colonises fairly quickly under warm incubation (~21–24 °C), but you may not see intense mycelial density early on. Wait until the substrate is well white before inducing fruiting.
Need to Wait? If you’re not ready to fruit after 3 weeks, you can store the bag in the fridge for up to a month. Do not refrigerate until colonisation is advanced.
Step 2 – Time to Fruit
When colonisation is mature, you trigger fruiting by cooling and adjusting airflow/humidity.
Follow these steps:
1. Cut / Expose: Make slits or open the bag at the intended fruiting side. In bottle or jar culture, opening the top or side allows primordia formation.
2. Humidity & Mist: Maintain 90–95 % humidity; mist gently if needed, avoid oversaturating thin stems.
3. Harvest: Enoki stems will grow and mature over ~7–10 days; harvest when stems reach desired length (thin, straight, small caps) by cutting at base. Multiple flushes possible.
Common Mistakes to avoid
Too warm during fruiting: Even though incubation is warm, fruiting at higher temps will shorten stems or abort pins.
Low humidity: Thin stems dry quickly — insufficient humidity causes them to shrivel or abort. Too much fresh air too early: Early exposure to airflow reduces stem elongation (caps open prematurely) — manage CO₂ until pins form.
What to do if pins form inside the bag:
Don’t worry. Just ignore the internal pins. Gently fold the top of the bag to push out excess air, cut a small “X” in the side of the bag (where you want the mushrooms to grow), and begin misting that spot daily. Mushrooms will start fruiting from that cut. The internal pins will eventually be aborted naturally, as they don’t have space to grow.
Checkout out our fine Misting Spray Bottle to produce tiny droplets and keep humidity high. The size of droplets formed can easily be evaporated , this constant evaporation signals mycelium to pin.
