About this Kit
Complete Kit: Everything you need is included—just add water and follow the simple instructions.
This kit uses a special Master’s Mix—a blend of sawdust, soy pellets, and water. It’s inoculated with about 300 grams of organic rye or millet grain spawn to give your mushrooms the best start.
We keep things simple and affordable by sending you a fresh, made-to-order bag, just like real mushroom farms use. No fancy boxes, no sitting in cold storage for weeks. This helps keep your cost down by $10; we pass that saving directly to you. We call these kits ‘almost ready to fruit’.
Chestnut mushrooms deliver a nutty, savory flavour and firm texture that works beautifully in stir-fries, soups, and sautés. They grow in tight clusters on hardwood substrates like beech or oak and are well-suited for indoor blocks or inoculated logs. A rewarding choice for growers with some experience.
Humidity: Keep humidity high—mist regularly to maintain moisture.
Light: Needs indirect, ambient light—no direct sun.
Air: Moderate airflow is essential—too much dries them out.
Storage: Keep the kit refrigerated (not frozen) to preserve vitality.
Chestnut Mushroom Grow Kit – Savory & Clustered
The Chestnut Mushroom (Pholiota adiposa) stands out with its golden-brown scaly caps and clustered formations. Fruiting typically begins 10–14 days after the transition to fruiting conditions (post 2–3 weeks colonisation). Their stems have a delightful crunch, and the deep, nutty flavour elevates gourmet dishes with character and umami depth
Step-by-step Instructions & Post-Harvest Care
IMPORTANT— Chestnut mushrooms are adapted to cool environments. Keep fruiting conditions between 12–21 °C and ensure consistent humidity and airflow.
Step 1 – Let It Grow (3 Weeks)
*Take the bag out of its packaging and remove the tape holding the folded bag.
*Stand it upright so the white filter patch is unrestricted on the top, this is where the mycelium in the bag breathes from. Do not cut the bag for fruiting yet.
Please keep it away from direct sunlight, windows, fans, AC, or a wardrobe.
Let it sit like this for 3 whole weeks from the inoculation date on the label.
Need to Wait?
If you’re not ready to start fruiting after the 3 weeks, you can store the bag in the fridge for up to a month. Do not store it in the fridge until the bag is fully colonised.
Step 2 – Fruiting & Harvest
Once colonisation is complete:
1. Cut: Make a 10 cm “X” or slit on top or side of the bag to expose fruiting surface.
2. Mist: Mist the exposed area 2–3 times daily to keep humidity high.
3. Harvest: Mushrooms should appear within 10–14 days. Harvest when caps are open but edges still firm.
Flushes: Expect multiple flushes—after each harvest, rest and continue misting to encourage regrowth.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Warm Temperatures: Above 21 °C suppresses pinning and delays fruiting.
Low Humidity: Causes aborted pins or poor cluster form.
Poor Airflow: Leads to slimy growth or contamination.
Direct Sunlight: Can dry or cook the block—avoid exposure.
💡 Tip: Keep temperature cool, humidity steady, and airflow gentle to ensure those rich, clustered mushrooms flourish.
What to do if pins form inside the bag
Don’t worry. Just ignore the internal pins. Gently fold the top of the bag to push out excess air, cut a small “X” in the side of the bag (where you want the mushrooms to grow), and begin misting that spot daily. Mushrooms will start fruiting from that cut. The internal pins will eventually be aborted naturally, as they don’t have space to grow.
Checkout out our fine Misting Spray Bottle to produce tiny droplets and keep humidity high. The size of droplets formed can easily be evoprated , this constant evoporation signals mycelium to pin
