Description
Two sizes are available: 700g and 3kg.
Our pre-sterilized, ready-to-use Sawdust and Bran Substrate are ideal for mushroom cultivation. Designed specifically for Wood-loving mushrooms, this substrate is hydrated to field capacity, ensuring optimal moisture content for mushroom growth.
This substrate is made from 80% sawdust (from hardwood) and 20% bran. Sawdust is the primary component, supplemented by bran, which provides quick growth because of extra nitrogen. For species like Shiitake and Turkey Tail, a nutrition ratio higher than 20% is not recommended as they primarily thrive on wood and don’t respond well to excess nutrition. Thus, this Sawdust and Bran Mushroom Substrate is an excellent substrate for them. Any medicinal mushrooms are best grown slowly as they pack more medicinal benefits than a mushroom that has grown relatively quickly. (This statement may not be accurate for all medicinal mushrooms).
This substrate can be used for all wood-loving species. Go to Grain Spawn and click on the “Fruiting Temperature tab” for more information.
If you are working with our Grain spawn and do not want to use up all the spawn in one go, inoculated a grain bag with agar or inoculated a substrate bag with grain spawn for which you had to cut open the bag but have no way to seal the bag again consider to have our Large Sealing Bag Clips
We use organic Wheat bran and Hardwood Sawdust along with Hardwood chips. When mycelium comes in contact with woodchips while growing, they become really Vigorous—resulting in thicker and faster colonization.
Source and Quality of Sawdust
We source our Sawdust directly from Tasmania, and pellets are made from Australian hardwood.
Substrate bags should be used within 14 days of arrival to prevent them drying out or risking contamination. Always open the bag carefully, inside a still air box or in front of a flow hood, as improper opening increases the risk of contamination.
If contamination does appear, it can be hard to know whether it originated from Rootlab, shipping, or your own environment. For this reason we recommend holding the bag for at least 5 days after arrival and doing a smell and visual check before inoculating, while still staying within the 14 day window so the bag doesn’t dry out.
Rootlab sends the bag taped in a box, upon receiving, remove the tape carefully and keep the bag upright.
Once You have inoculated the bag with grain spawn, colonisation should take place somewhere with good airflow, but out of direct sunlight and away from any direct heat or cold source.
