Preferred Substrate
When growing Hericium erinaceus in Australia, it thrives best on hardwood sawdust.. For the best yields and larger fruit bodies, we recommend using supplemented sawdust (80% sawdust and 20% bran) or Masters Mix (a combination of sawdust and soy hulls). hardwood fuel pellets are also viable if sawdust is unavailable.Fuel Pellets are compressed hardwood sawdust, when you add water to it, they become hydrated sawdust.
Incubation
To achieve optimal growth, Hericium erinaceus requires an incubation period of 10-21 days, depending on the substrate used, temperature and amount of spawn used. The fruiting block will not turn completely white like it does with other species. The ideal incubation temperature ranges between 21-24°C, with a core temperature not exceeding 26°C to avoid overheating.
Pinning and Fruiting Conditions
- Pinning Temperature: To promote pinning, maintain a temperature of 15-18°C, with a humidity level of 90-100%.
- Fruiting Conditions: For successful fruiting, the ideal temperature is 18-21°C, with a range of 16-24°C. Maintain humidity at 90-95% and CO2 concentration between 500-1000 ppm.
